MEDICINE DRUMS

Care, Instructions & Guidelines

OPENING REFLECTION

“Drum, that marks the heartbeat
of Our Mother Earth,
constantly reminding us
who gave us birth.
The rhythm of connection,
pulse of flame and Fire,
The perfect reflection
of our heart’s desire.”

— Jamie Sams, Sacred Path Cards

The drum holds a special place among instruments. In many cosmologies, it is said that the world itself came into being with the very first beat of a drum.

Its sound awakens a primordial memory — the heartbeat, the first rhythm we ever knew in prenatal life. Two synchronized rhythms, heart and drum, echo the ancient ocean from which life emerged.

The drum is more than an instrument. It is a mount for consciousness — a companion through which life, death, and transformation become sound.

What was once a living being becomes voice, presence, and ally on the path of the Heart.

PART I — GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Medicine Drums are instruments dedicated to inner journey, self-expression, healing, and spiritual practice. They support the full embodiment of human potential through rhythm and presence.

There are two main types of Medicine Drums.

  • Traditional Fixed Drums (non-tunable)
  • Tunable Medicine Drums

Both carry the same essence, but differ in construction and interaction with sound.

All drums are handmade in our workshop with deep respect for materials, process, and the living nature of sound.

NATURE OF THE INSTRUMENT

Traditional drums are the result of many years of drum-making experience.

Once assembled, the tension of the hide is fixed and cannot be adjusted.

They are made using natural raw hide, which responds to environment.

  • Humidity
  • Temperature
  • Dryness

SOUND BEHAVIOR

  • Warm or dry conditions → hide tightens → pitch rises
  • Cold or humid conditions → hide loosens → pitch lowers

This is a natural property of raw hide and part of the drum’s living character.

MATERIALS AND ETHICS

  • Hides are sourced locally and ethically
  • The Animals are never killed for the hide, rather the hide is rescued from being utylized or wasted. Ritual offerings of thanksgiving are performed regularly to honor the spirit of the animal.
  • Drum making is understood asa way of transformation and gratitude by creating beauty and honouring the Spirit of the Animal giving a new voice to theis spirit.

ENERGY AND CHARACTER

Traditional drums carry a strong, direct, focused vibration. They are experienced as grounding and heart-centering in an active, expressive way.

CARE FOR TRADITIONAL DRUMS

The more the drum is played, the more it opens and resonates.

Avoid extreme moisture or extreme cold.

If the drum becomes flat in humidity or cold: Gently warm it near (not directly on) a fire, sun, or heat source. Do not overheat, as this may cause permanent damage.

PART III — TUNABLE MEDICINE DRUMS

NATURE OF THE INSTRUMENT

Tunable drums allow adjustment of skin tension depending on environmental conditions and preference. This enables control over sound stability and tonal character.

SOUND BEHAVIOR

  • Warm or dry → higher pitch
  • Cold or humid → lower pitch

Unlike fixed drums, tuning can be adjusted to maintain or refine sound.

MATERIALS AND ETHICS

  • Goat, fallow deer, or deer raw hide is used
  • All materials are sourced locally and ethically
  • The Animals are never killed for the hide, rather the hide is rescued from being utylized or wasted. Ritual offerings of thanksgiving are performed regularly to honor the spirit of the animal.
  • Drum making is understood asa way of transformation and gratitude by creating beauty and honouring the Spirit of the Animal giving a new voice to theis spirit.
  • Entire construction is handmade in our workshop

ENERGY AND CHARACTER

Tunable drums offer a more flexible relationship with sound. They support both grounding and expansion depending on tuning and intention.

CARE FOR TUNABLE DRUMS

Adjust tension gently when humidity or dryness affects sound. Small adjustments are usually enough. Instruction video is available for guidance. With practice, tuning becomes intuitive and simple.
